Terraces of first-century Nazareth were built using a light chalky limestone (nari), which was once commonly used in construction. Unfortunately for us, today’s techniques have no use for nari stone, making it unavailable by normal commercial means. Modern development have also caused natural concentrations of the stone to become increasingly scarce.
This only made our job more interesting, as we scouted the wilder hillsides of Galilee for fieldstone, negotiated for its removal and collected and hauled it to the site ourselves.
